The Ballet Bible – Is it worth it?

Update 2020: Unfortunately this product has now been taken off the market place.

If you would like some private online lessons, please email me at michelmaling@yahoo.com for further information.

I purchased The Ballet Bible DVD a few years ago, shortly after it came out, to get some ideas to use with my teaching, and these are my experiences with the product.

In order to get your hands on your own copy of The Ballet Bible, click here.

Since then, of course, the product has evolved and gotten even better with more bonuses, which I don’t have, but the fundamentals are still there.

Why Do You Need The Ballet Bible?

the ballet bibleAnita Leembrugge is the developer of this project, and she initially created the Ballet Bible to help beginners with their technique, speed, and precision.

Anita has used her own difficult experience with starting ballet late and all the problems she had to overcome to create this product which is what makes it so special.

She claims that this product will improve your ballet technique in the shortest time possible.

Included in the download is the ebook 3 Simple Rules of a Ballerina.  This is a very insightful read and you will gain a lot of knowledge by just reading this and applying it.

Since I bought the product, she has also added some more useful bonuses that weren’t included back then, like an exclusive interview with choreographer Gareth Belling.  This bonus alone would have gotten me to buy the product back then.

My favorite part of the course are the videos where she shows you exactly how to execute each step. There is a large collection of different steps to view, but some of them may be a little advanced for beginners.

Who Is The Ballet Bible DVD Aimed At?

This is a wonderful aid to those who are learning ballet and also for teachers like myself. For those that aren’t in formal ballet classes, it can prove difficult to achieve some of the steps without the correct background training and proper correction from a qualified teacher.

The French Vocabulary is also explained in detail in a French terminology module, which is a great resource for any dancer to have.  Once a dancer reaches a certain level, she has to know all the names of all the steps in French, so that if she ever joins a dance company, she can understand what the choreographer is demanding of her.

Even dancers doing their major ballet exams will need to know their vocab.

Although I loved this product and the ideas that it gave me, I tend to worry that some may take the Ballet Bible and exchange it for proper formal dance lessons.

I think that the Ballet Bible was created to help you to further your ballet career with the help of a professional coach or teacher.  It is extremely dangerous to take on training yourself, with nobody to guide you, as you can develop bad habits, and also injure yourself.

What Does The Ballet Bible Consist Of?

Here is a small list of some of the things you can expect from The Ballet Bible – The 3 Simple Rules of a Prima Ballerina.

  • Advice on how to succeed as a dancer.
  • What you should look for in a dance teacher – If you don’t know what to look for you could end paying good money for bad advice.

  • Ballet Class – From Adage to Pointe. Learn how a class is structured and the significance of each part.
  • French Terminology – How to decipher common words.
  • Incorrect diagrams. See first hand how NOT to perform a movement or stance. No other guide shows you this!

  • How to make sure you are not weakening your muscles or unbalancing your joints. Many dancers compromise their training with poor habits outside the studio.
  • Classical Ballet Training: From Start to Finish – The method, movements, and technique. You will be blown away at your improvement!
  • Learn the correct way to perform Developpés: Most dancers never learn the correct form and wonder why they can’t balance properly and can’t do it fast enough.
  • Common Errors – Some dancers struggle again and again with the same things. You will be able to quickly identify your weak points and find out exactly how to correct them.
  • The 6 primary positions of the feet. Where every movement starts and finishes. This is essential training!
  • The 9 Arm Poses – Learn exactly how to perform each pose. You will undoubtedly impress others with your comprehensive knowledge.

  • Learn the best practice exercises to train your leg muscles and prepare you for pointe.
  • Do you know the components of a pointe shoe? Learn how to determine the best pointe shoe for your foot shape.
  • Tying the pointe shoe. Follow step-by-step examples with clear descriptions. You’ll be able to do it blindfolded in no time at all.
  • How to correctly balance yourself for optimum flexibility and performance. Most dancers never learn and constantly struggle with problems that could so easily be avoided.
  • Why stretching is important. If you know how to use it to drastically increase your performance you’ll wonder why everyone else hasn’t caught on.
  • Great looking legs can be created – Have you ever seen a ballerina with ugly looking legs?
  • Warming up and cooling down – Do this one extra thing and notice the difference straight away.
  • Improper stretching – Are you stretching incorrectly and actually hindering your performance (You’ll be surprised)
  • Exactly how to convey the right meaning for your specific movement or expression… (You don’t want to appear as if you’re saying you have big ears when you’re just listening).
  • How to pose for maximum impact… learn how to use your whole body so that the audience understands exactly what you are saying without thinking twice.
  • How to develop your own unique style and personality to your mime (Ever notice how some dancers always seem to have that extra added “character” in their performances? That’s because they’re using this technique.)
  • 5 classic stories of love and adventure. These include popular works like “The Nutcracker” and “Sleeping Beauty”.
  • Want to rendition your own version of Pierre Gardel’s famous play. How to use your new found knowledge of ballet mime.
  • “To the point” recollections. You won’t be bored with uninteresting detail while you fall asleep.

Reviews found for The Ballet Bible:

“I’m just getting back into ballet and I can’t thank you enough” “I danced for many years when I was younger but I stopped and have regretted it ever since. I downloaded The 3 Simple Rules of a Prima Ballerina a few days ago and I feel just as excited about dancing as I once was. I can’t believe how much helpful information there is in this guide. I’m looking forward to picking up where I left off and this is just the thing I need.”Betty Whittle, QLD

“I wish I had this book when I first started out.” “My compliments to the author on the book! It’s written in a manner that makes it feel like she’s there explaining everything to you in person which makes it so easy that even a beginner can understand. As a seasoned dancer, I wish I had this when I started dancing over 10 years ago. It would have helped me develop my technique much better and faster. I expect that when my daughter is old enough, she’ll be reading it too!” Tanya Gould, CO

“Even my eight year old daughter thanks you.” “I bought this guide for my daughter who started ballet 6 months ago. Let me tell you she has improved so much from just following the pictures! She is now one of the best in her class and her teacher is amazed at her progress. It gives me great joy being able to read The 3 Simple Rules of a Prima Ballerina with her and help her develop into a beautiful little ballerina. Thanks for writing this brilliant book. We both love it.Mary Dixon, LA

Finally, in closing, I would like to say that The Ballet Bible DVD and course is well suited as a supplement to those studying ballet, teachers, and even adults who have studied ballet in the past and would like to get back into it.

I would not, however, substitute regular ballet classes and proper training with a professional teacher with this course.

  1. Hi Mergie,

Great post! I learned a lot from this post.

Though I am not a dancer of any kind, your review on Ballet Bible is very informative and I can share to people that do ballet. Realise that Ballet Bible will further the ballet career along side a professional coach is a great help.

    Thanks for this wonderful post!

  2. Hello Michel,
Although I am not involved in dancing in any way but your post was informative and inspirational.
You made a honest review about The Ballet Bible and I appreciate that. I think it’s true that learning only from books are hard, and it’s cannot replace proper training with mentors.

Thanks, I am sure those who are interested in dancing will benefice from this.
    All the best!

  3. Hi

I’m definitely not (or have ever been or ever will be) a ballet dancer but I have a young daughter who just may want to at some point in her young life ‘want to dance’.
It sounds like I’d be looking for a book like this should my daughter get serious about becoming a professional ballet dancer and it looks like there is some very helpful stuff here

    Regards

  4. I can’t believe that there is already a book about ballet. My daughter is a member of their school’s ballet club and she’s very graceful when it comes to dancing ballet. I would definitely buy this book so she can learn more techniques and tips for her to become a professional ballet dancer someday. Great review Mergie1

  5. This looks like a very interesting and promising product – my sister was well into ballet as a teenager ( a young one at that! ) but me being a boy – no chance!
Love the way you have pinpointed the features and laid them out for interested parties to read – I may be looking for something like this for my daughter

  6. Dear Mergie,

The Ballet Bible seems quite a read, inspired by a professional ballet dancer, it has been very neatly laid out indeed. 🙂 Aside from having to read it word for word in this book, I am more of a visual learner with everything and can usually pick up the dance routines when I have someone physically teaching me rather than me having to read about what I should do to improve my dance steps.
A book can in no ways take the place of a teacher. A book is an extra but a mentor is primarily the first line of guidance to push one the right direction to succeed.

Thanks for your time and effort writing this informative fascinating blog post. 🙂

Wishing you all the best with your online business and futuristic endeavors above and beyond the horizon,

    ~Angel

  7. I greatly enjoyed reading your website! It looks so nice from the outset. It was bit funny though that the first add I see is about bunion – really hilarious in fact! Ballet is not something I’m very familiar with, but you always learn something new! And for ballet dancers, this ballet Bible must be worth the investment – it sounds like it’s filled with good advice! But unlike you, I have a hard time thinking that any ballet dancer would entertain the thought of substituting regular ballet classes with a Ballet Bible course. I myself would answer your question: Yes, it is worth it!

  8. This book, The Ballet Bible, seems to be written for experienced dancers not new dancers. It would certainly help with improving technique, but I think that it would be better to use this book in conjunction with lessons from teachers to advise and assist with technique. Your own unique style would develop over time and with the help of this book.

  9. Hi there,

Nice article, I really enjoyed reading it.
I used to dance ballet when I was younger, and became a petit rat dancer if you know what I mean:) I stopped for some reasons and today I would like to dance again, but only for pleasure. I am sure that the ballet bible book is very helpful, but would it be for people like me?
Thank you very much for this helpful review

    • The ballet bible is great to get the low down of the steps, but I would still recommend using it along with some formal lessons. There are many adult classes, and I am sure you will be able to find one to suit you.

She had joined ballet course before, but she stopped because she didn’t like to use legging. Could you please make any suggestion for handling this issue?

  14. My daughter has been involved in ballet for almost 5 years. She is now 8 and loves it and wants to get involved in ballet even more. I still need to get a few Christmas Gifts for her and the Ballet Bible might have to be one of them.

But before I purchase this, do you think it is appropriate for an 8 year old, with my help of course?

    Thanks

    • The Ballet Bible may be a bit advanced for an 8 year old. Why not buy her some pretty dance gear or a bag geared towards her ballet. There is loads on Amazon.

I will have to forward this site to them. One thing would be nice is more pictures of ballet this would make your site awesome! I don’t know much about ballet but I am sure they will be keen to read the book. I think you should have a couple of pictures of the book as well.

  16. From your review I find that the ballet bible is one useful guide for all those who want to make it big in dancing. I was interested in dancing during my college days and later I lost my interest. Now after reading your review, again I fell like learning dance and making it big as a renowned dancer.

  17. I’ve always thought it’d be so cool to learn how to dance and the Ballet Bible gives the impression that it is the perfect guide to learning how! I agree though that it’s probably something that is best used by people who have already had one on one training from a professional before they try some of the moves themselves. What does this cost? I clicked on your link but wasn’t able to find a price anywhere.

  18. Hello, Michel!

I am glad I found this review on The Ballet Bible. We have been considering putting our daughter into dance classes because she just loves dancing and we feel it would be great for her to try pursuing her passion.

She’s only four and I was never in dance lessons as a child so I have no idea what to look for in a dance instructor. I think this will really help me.

    Thanks for sharing!

  19. Anything that describes itself as the “bible” of a subject is making quite a statement to live up to.
But as you have stated, any book full of advice and information on a specific sport should just be a supplement to professional coaching.
An experienced dance coach brings benefits that no book can replace.

  20. Your review was very genuine, helps a reader like me who is absolutely not a dancer get to some knowledge of ballet and actually interested in checking out The Ballet Bible. I also very much liked that you linked the names of all the steps in french, as I am actually living in Paris sometimes I go watch ballet shows, that gives me some basic insight of ballet. In the end, you also brought up in order to pursue a more professional practice, you are better off seeking professional coach or trainer, I think that was very thoughtful and genuine.

  22. I see your point, Michel. If it were any other dance, one can simply just do it on their own for starters. But for ballet when there are loads of things to take notice on how each body part has to be properly placed and moved, a beginner can’t learn this on her own just by reading the ebook and watching the video without the consequences.

But yeah, this is a great review of the product. Very objective of you to point out the pros and cons.

  23. This is so cool! I love when professionals compile their knowledge in a way that is easy for us to understand. Do you think The Ballet Bible would still be useful for very, very young dancers (with the help of their parents)? Or would it be more for a more mature dancer who could read, understand and implement the techniques on their own?

    • Thanks for stopping by Kiersten. I think that The Ballet Bible is best suited to pupils studying the higher levels of ballet, say from about 12 years, unless the parents want to learn more about what their children are doing of course.

My sisters been dancing all her life and absolutely loves it. I’m sure she would love to read this post as she’s always looking to improve.

I had no idea there was a book dedicated on teaching how to become better at ballet.

From your review, it looks like this book couldn’t be anymore thorough. Thanks for the recommendation and for sharing your experience with us!

It seems like a great educational piece of work. Great review of it.

  27. Hello. I was searching for Ballet tutorials on DVDs and stumbled upon your beautiful website. Let me just say that I really like your website design. As for the article, my daughter is 5 years old and she was very talented and gifted. At the moment she is takes dance lessons but after she saw a ballet on TV once, she become every interested ever since.

We now started with ballet lessons also but she would prefer something to work from home. That is why I need your opinion is Ballet Bible good for a child of her age or not?

    Thanks.

    Reply
    • At the age of five, it is better to have a qualified teacher. The Ballet Bible DVD is aimed at older dancers with a bit more experience.

      I hope this helps.

  28. My daughter has been so keen to learn how to do ballet and unfortunately I only did ballet for a few months as a child. The ballet classes here cost a fortune and I have not heard great things about the only class available (we live in a small town). Do you think this will help learn how to do ballet? She is nearly 7 years old and she has never done ballet before.

    Reply
    • This course is designed more with the older dancer in mind. I wouldn’t take chances with a seven year old, because without a professional coach she could do herself injury over time, and also form bad habits which will be impossible to get rid of later.

The Ballet Bible DVD is designed mostly a reference and guide for dancers who are already doing lessons.
